Alanna Anderson's "Painting With Rainbows" Student Exhibition Review

Alanna Anderson, an art student at Sacranmento State, curated her own exhibition with her own paintings. She calls her exhibition "Painting with Rainbows" because of the fact that her works are very colorful, lively, and vibrant. After walking around the exhibition I was in awe of her painting style and the colors she used. Her art style is her very own and they each have an original story she created.
"Little Park Date"
I asked Alanna where she gets her inspiration from that inspires her work and she mentioned that she gets inspiration from video games, cartoons, and other artists' around her, but her main inspiration are video games that she plays to which she was able to create another realm of video game styles and characters. She excitedly said she wants to create her own video game someday with the art style she's developing. Her artistry stems from creating a scene and a character that goes along with that scene. Each of her artworks have a unique storyline that adds more character to her works. She tries to convey the story to her audience more ad she adds that "an image is worth a 1000 words" and she wants her works to be read in that way visually.
"Journey Through Time". Through this piece, Alanna wanted to showcase a timeline for the character from childhood to adulthood. Some of the visual elements through this piece has aspects of childhood items like the bear, the blocks, and the hopscotch. She mentioned that many people have said that her art style is similar to the PowerPuff Girls and I certainly agreed! The inspiration for this work was from Sonic the Hedgehog with the look of large-scaled heads and eyes.
I asked Alanna how the process of curating your own exhibition felt and she said that truly the only hard part was bringing all her large-scaled works into the space, but putting them all up and fixating them into place wasn't so hard. She did have to make little signs that have the artworks title and a little background for the viewers to understand the work better. She stated that she definitely recommends this opportunity to showcase your work and get out of your comfort zone. It's an opportunity to get recognition for all the hard work artists put in and get a little confidence boost from strangers who are seeing certain art for the first time. It was great seeing this exhibition and interviewing Alanna on her exhibition and ideas behind them.

  1. Hi Neelab,
I also was able to stop into this exhibition very briefly a few weeks ago and I was completely obsessed with the vibrant colors! I especially loved all of the works that take place in space; they were so transportive and dreamy. I talked with Alanna briefly, but it sounds like you had a much more in-depth conversation with her, so it was really nice to hear even more about her creative process. She was so kind when I visited and I cannot wait to see more work from her in the near future. Her art style is very reminiscent of video games and children's cartoons, so I can vividly picture her dream of originating her own video game coming true! Something I thought was really innovative, which you mentioned, is that she hand-wrote her own labels. In class, we've learned about art that focuses on removing the human touch, but I tend to like art that emphasizes human touch, which Alanna does very well.
